The engine provides a robust store for multiple topic maps; an extensive API accessible via any language supported by the Microsoft CLR; a high-level web services interface that allows both reading and updating of topic maps using SOAP-based web service calls; a powerful Query Language based on SQL; and full support for XTM.

    Status: active development
  • tinyTIM tinyTIM is a very small, easy to use, in memory Topic Map engine. It implements the TMAPI interfaces, so one can work with Topic Maps via the TMAPI standard. TMAPI will be for XTM what DOM is for XML. tinyTIM ships with tmapi-utils which contains an XTM Parser and an XTM Serializer to read and write XTM 1.0 compliant files. tmapi-utils also contains a RDF to topic map converter. tmapi-utils will also contain an LTM(linear topic map) parser and writer. [open source, java]
    Status: active development [java]
  • Mappa Mappa is a Topic Maps engine written in Python. It supports different backends (i.e. a TMAPI backend that utilizes a TMAPI compatible Topic Maps engine). Some of the backends are Jython compatible. It supports a Pythonic API which is easy to use. [open source, python, jython]
Status: active development [python, jython, java]
  • TM4J is a topic map engine implemented entirely in Java. The project aims to produce a complete suite of tools for creating, processing and publishing topic map information. (open source)
    Status: ??? latest version (2004-10)
  • Perl XTM CPAN modul to read/write XTM files, read/write AsTMa resources and manipulate and query topic maps via API. [free, perl]
Status: active development (latest version 2005-06)
  • XTM4XMLDB is an implementation of the TMAPI for native XML - Database, which supports the XML:DB API. XTM4XMLDB is a TopicMap engine, which works with a native XMLDB as Backend. Status: ??? (latest version 2004-12) [java]
  • ZTM aims to enable distributed development and maintenance of ‘topic map’-driven ‘semantic’ web sites by handling data model information items derived from the ISO 13250 Topic Map Data Model as managed content using the Zope CMF.
Status: ??? (version 2004-08) [python, zope]
  • Tm4JScript It is primary two things: an Topic Maps engine written in JavaScript an Topic Maps editor for use with Explorer 5+ and Mozilla 1.1+ browsers (including Netscape 6.2+).
Status: ??? (latest version 2003-11) [javascript]
  • SemanText is a prototype application developed to demonstrate how the topic map standard (ISO/IEC 13250:2000) can be used to represent semantic networks. Semantic networks are a building block for artificial intelligence applications such as inference engines and expert systems. SemanText builds a knowledge base, in the form of a semantic network, from the topic map. New information can be added to the knowledge base and topic map automatically when the user defines rules which are used to infer new knowledge. All of this is done using constructs defined in the topic map standard.
    Status: ??? [Python]

Navigators / Applications / Visualisation

  • HyperGraph is an open source project which provides java code to work with hyperbolic geometry and especially with hyperbolic trees. It provides a very extensible api to visualize hyperbolic geometry, to handle graphs and to layout hyperbolic trees.
Status: active development (latest version 2005-10)
  • TM View designed and implemented for the Bauhaus University of Weimar, this Topicmap Viewer demonstrates the use of Topic Maps to generate semantic knowledge maps. It shows instance relations, associations and occurrences stored in a Topic Map about xmltools.
    Status: ???
  • L4 NetWorker Commercial Java-based application to provide semantic topicmap-based services for navigation and search. Open interfaces allow for easy deployment on top and for integration of existing IT systems (DMS, ERP etc.)

Topic Map Product Integrations

  • Networked Planet TMIA SharePoint Edition - The TMIA SharePoint product provides a very easy and effective way to allow groups of users within an organization to create and manage information items. These items can be documents, link lists, discussions, events and announcements. All of these items are created in the context of a site and creating a new site is as easy as creating a new document or document library. TMIA SharePoint Edition provides a set of components that enable users to create an ontology consisting of both SharePoint items and topics that represent the domain ontology. Users can then classify and organize any SharePoint item, site, document, list item, into a topic map. Once these items are organized another set of components allow users to Search, Navigate and Find any item in any site that is relevant. Topic maps can be created to span multiple sites, providing an effective integration between SharePoint sites, and enabling a user on one site to quickly locate relevant information on another site.
Status: Active development (Latest version 2005-09) and commercial deployment.

XSL

  • Nikita Ogievetsky of Cogitech has provided XSLT stylesheets for the transformation of the numerous existing XML DTDs for topic maps. The stylesheets are designed to convert topic maps from the syntaxes used by tools from Cogitech, Empolis, Infoloom, Ontopia and Techquila.com into the XTM syntax.
